Hubei Province

Hubei province is located in the central part of China and the middle reaches of Yangtze River, and therefore it is situated at a very advantageous strategic location in China that links east to west, connects south with north, and flows down the river to ocean. The whole province has an area of 185,900 square kilometers,with 12 cities, 1 autonomous prefectures, 38 districts under cities, 24 county level cities (3 directly under the provincial government), 38 counties, 2 autonomous counties and 1 forestry district and the resident population is nearly 60 million.
The cultural background of Hubei Province is profound. The hometown of Yan emperor, the first ancestor of the Chinese Nation is in Hubei Province. Chu State in Spring and Autumn Period and Warring State Period created splendid Chu culture in over 800 years’ history. The first rise of the 1911 revolution occurred in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei.
The resources in Hubei are abundant. The Yangtze River runs 1061 km in Hubei Province, lakes are densely covered in this province, the network of rivers is vertical and horizontal and this province has been always called A Province with One Thousand Lakes. There are over 4000 large and small rivers, totaling over 60,000km long, the water resources are very abundant, the water energy available for development reaches up to 31,330,000kw, taking the fourth place in China, among which the generating capacity of Three Gorges Project takes the first place among the largest world hydraulic power plants. There are 138 kinds of mineral resources discovered at present, among which the reserves of phosphor, plaster and rock salt comes out top all over the country. Hubei is one of the provinces with relatively rich tourism resources and it has famous scenic spots including mountains, rivers and cultural relics.
Hubei is the largest integrated transportation and communication hub in central China with several railways going through Hubei, in which Beijing-Kowloon railway, Beijing-Guangzhou railway, Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed rail,  Jiaozuo - Zhicheng railway and Zhicheng-Liuzhou railway have connected the north and south, and Wuhan-Daye railway, Wuhan-Yichang railway, Wuhan-Danjiangkou railway, Xiangyang-Chongqing railway have connected the east and west. Several expressways such as Beijing-Zhuhai expressway, Shanghai-Chengdu expressway, Yichang-Huangshi expressway, Huangshi-Huangmei expressway, Wuhan-Shiyan expressway criss-cross Hubei for connecting the large and medium-sized cities—Wuhan, Huangshi, Ezhou, Jingzhou, Yichang, Xiangyang, Shiyan and so on.  By the end of 2014, the total expressway mileage of Hubei is 5,106 km, integrating the affluent Jianghan plain, western Hubei, southeastern Hubei, and the northeast mountain area of Hubei into one as a whole. Wuhan Tianhe international Airport is also the largest airport of central China and it has opened international airlines from Wuhan to American, France, Japan, Korea and any other countries. Like Yichang, Xiangyang, Enshi, Jingzhou, Shengnongjia and other cities in Hubei also have opened up air channel connecting all parts of the country. Yangtze River flows through 26 counties and cities of Hubei from west to east with 1,061km mileage in Hubei, which is one third of its navigable mileage. Among 163 inland ports, there are two ports having capacity between 5 million and 10 million tons. Wuhan port, Huangshi port, Shashi port , Yichang port have successively opened to the outside world for seagoing vessel can voyage directly to Japan, Korea, Singapore and so on. The coaxial cable from Beijing to Guangzhou, and the fiber optic cable from Nanjing to Chongqing intersect in Wuhan, contributed to a national influential modern communication networks. Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, known as "Thorough fares of nine provinces", is an extremely important hub of transportation and communication.
Hubei is one of the important industrial and agricultural bases in China. As to the industry, 8 pillar industries including automobile, metallurgy, machinery, electric power, chemical industry, electric information, light industry and textile industry and construction materials have taken shape, the state-owned large-sized enterprises such as Dongfeng Automobile Corporation and Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Corporation play an important role in the national economy. Hubei is one of the main grain producing areas in China, with two largest agricultural bases including Jianghan Plain and North Hillock and it has been called a land flowing with milk and honey. Grain, cotton, oil and fresh water products take an important place all over the country.
The scientific and educational strength in Hubei is powerful, now there are more than 120 general colleges and universities, the number of university students is about 1.4 million, and over 110 thousand graduate students. The Science and Technology and R&D capabilities is among the best in China, there are over 1700 institutions of scientific research and development, so Hubei has a great advantage of scientific research and production capacity in the high and new technology, such as optoelectronic information, new materials, bioengineering and new medicine, aerospace, laser, CNC technology and computer software development.
The capital city Wuhan, had been appointed by the State Council as the central city of central China. With the fully implementation of the rise of central China strategy proposed by the central government, Hubei province is embracing the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for sound development. In the year of 2014, the GDP of Hubei was 2.736704 trillion RMB Yuan(about 0.43782464 trillion U.S. Dollars), an increase of 9.7% growth rate ranked seventh in China and the first in the central area of China. The province's investment in fixed assets was 2.430305 trillion Yuan, an increase of 20.4%, and 70.1% of the investment was private investment. The total retail sales of social consumer goods was 1.180627 trillion Yuan, Compared with 2013 increased by 12.8%. The electricity business transactions exceeded 800 billion Yuan. The tourism revenue reached 375.2 billion Yuan, an increase of 17%. The new loans of financial institutions was 340.9 billion Yuan, increased by 15.6%. The import and export trade volume reached 43 billion U.S. Dollars, an increase of 18.4%. The number of the world top 500 enterprises, which had invested in Hubei increased from 16 to228.The added value of Hubei high-tech industry exceeded 400 billion Yuan, accounting for the proportion of GDP reached 16.3%. In the next period, we are going to dedicate to the scientific development and leap forward development of Hubei and build Hubei to be an vital strategic supporting point for the rise of central China.
